Your rights as a patient (Does not include extended free choice of hospital)

As a patient, you are basically free to choose from any of the public hospitals throughout Denmark. However, a hospital department may refuse patients if that department has significantly longer waiting times for the treatment in question than other similar departments.

If you wish to exercise your free choice of another public hospital, please contact the department/hospital on the telephone number you were given in your appointment letter.

The treatment you are referred to does not give you the right to choose a private hospital.

The extended free choice of hospital does not include: Organ transplantation, sterilization, fertility treatment, referral treatment, hearing aid treatment, cosmetic treatment, gender reassignment surgery or stay in a convalescent home.

The extended free choice of hospital gives patients the right to choose a private hospital if they have to wait more than 30 days for treatment at a hospital in the Central Denmark Region or at one of the private hospitals with which the Central Denmark Region works.

Generally speaking, you must make your own way to and from the hospital for treatment.
