Your rights as a patient (treatment)

As a patient, you are basically free to choose from any of the public hospitals throughout Denmark. However, a hospital department may refuse patients if that department has significantly longer waiting times for the treatment in question than other similar departments.

If you wish to exercise your free choice of another public hospital, please contact the department/hospital on the telephone number you were given in your appointment letter.

If you have to wait more than 30 or 60 days for treatment at a hospital in the Central Denmark Region or at one of the private hospitals with which the Central Denmark Region works, you are also free to choose a private hospital. If you have been referred for treatment or have been examined after June 1st 2023, the deadline is 60 days. Otherwise it is 30 days.

In psychiatry applies 30 days for treatment.

Before you can choose a private hospital, there must be a treatment agreement in place between the regions and the private hospital. And the waiting time for the treatment must not exceed the waiting time at the Central Denmark Region’s hospitals or the private hospitals with which we work.

Generally speaking, you must make your own way to and from the hospital for treatment.
